I had no intention of pursuing any legal claim until one of your staff members encouraged me to. They told me I had a strong base for a CTP claim and, for the first time since the accident, I felt a sense of hope, hope that maybe someone finally saw what I was going through, that maybe I wouldn’t have to face this pain, stress, and exhaustion completely alone. I was a word of mouth referral as well which is partially why this hurts even more. But that hope was taken away just as quickly as it was given. When the lawyer called, I was told that because part of my income is subsidised by Centrelink, your firm could not help me. I work part-time, not by choice, but because I’m a single parent caring for a Level 3 non-verbal autistic child. His needs are constant and high. I do everything I can to provide for him, however i am limited to what hours I can work due to his high needs. Yet I was left feeling like none of that mattered that because Centrelink supports part of my income, I somehow wasn’t “worth” helping. It was devastating. Even if Centrelink were to reclaim some of any successful settlement, I would still have something, still have a chance to rebuild after being injured in an accident that wasn’t my fault. Instead, I was left feeling embarrassed, dismissed, and completely insignificant. I didn’t ask for false hope. I didn’t ask to be told I had a strong claim only to be rejected because of circumstances outside my control. I didn’t ask to be made to feel like my pain and my reality weren’t important.
