UPDATE: After leaving my initial review, the firm contacted me offering a refund in exchange for removing it. They sent a non-disclosure agreement, but I didn’t feel comfortable signing away my voice, so I created my own version that would allow me to keep sharing my experience. It was only after I mentioned I was considering lodging a formal complaint with the Office of the Legal Services Commissioner (OLSC) that a senior staff member reached out to ask how they could resolve things. Eventually, I did receive a refund and the firm covered the cost of my SA. At that point, I was told my case was ready to lodge, but the process dragged on for another month with repeated requests for documents they already had and emails that I personally found dismissive in tone. In the end, I finally received a positive skills assessment more than 7 months after my last eligible work experience, and over a year after I had first engaged them. In my view, the case only moved forward once I pushed for action, and I believe it could have been resolved many months earlier. That delay cost me not just money, but also health, time, and the opportunity to secure residency. I’m sharing this so that other immigrants are aware: if your case is straightforward, consider lodging yourself. If it’s more complex, smaller firms that truly prioritize clients might be a better fit. Social media presence can be attractive, but remember it is often just marketing, not a refection of professionalism. Finally, if you ever feel wronged by a lawyer, know that lodging a complaint with the Office of the Legal Services Commissioner (OLSC) sounds daunting but is actually quite straightforward. Their website explains the process clearly. Don’t be afraid to stand up for yourself. Your voice matters, and you have more power than you think. ------------------ Extremely Disappointed. Poor Continuity, Mismanagement, and Misleading Advice I hired this firm primarily due to their strong social media presence and the excellent rapport I had with the first lawyer I spoke to, TJ. I explained the complexities of my case from the outset, and despite those, they assured me they could assist. However, once I paid the fees, the tone and quality of the service changed dramatically. I was never informed that TJ would be going on maternity leave. My case was handed over to Karla, who, while kind and seemingly diligent, was not properly briefed. It felt like I was starting from scratch, re-explaining details that I had already disclosed. Shortly after, a new lawyer, Krishneel, took over and gave me incorrect advice over the phone—advice that ultimately compromised my application. He was later removed from the firm for this exact issue: providing misleading guidance. Unfortunately, the damage to my case had already been done. I was then assigned Hanan, who was the most unprofessional lawyer I have ever dealt with. She was unfamiliar with my file, dismissive of my attempts to explain the nuances of my situation, and treated me with blatant disrespect during a call. As an immigrant, I’ve unfortunately grown used to being overlooked or mistreated, but this experience was particularly degrading. After that, Thanh became responsible for my case. She was more professional and compassionate, but by that point, the situation had deteriorated significantly due to the earlier mishandling. Her final assessment of my case mirrored exactly what I told the firm in the very first consultation, confirming that nothing of substance had been gained through this expensive and chaotic process. Even Traci, the director, got involved and prematurely mentioned lodging an EOI (Expression of Interest) for me, despite my case still being unresolved. This gave me false hope and added to the confusion. In summary, this firm lacks continuity, internal communication, and the ability to handle complex cases. If your case is straightforward, you may find cheaper, more stable options elsewhere. If your case is nuanced or requires careful management, Maison Chen is not the firm you wanna deal with.
